Book Review: 50 Shades of Grey

When last we spoke I didn’t have any idea what I planned on reading next. Then I decided: The Shining by Stephen King. I’ve been a fan of his books since I was a kid, but somehow never read one of his most popular books. I’m a fan of the Stanley Kubrick film adaptation, and maybe because King himself isn’t, I decided not to read the book? I don’t know. So while I was delving into his classic suspense yarn, one of my friends gave me the 50 Shades trilogy by EL James. In all honesty I wasn’t interested in reading it. Mainly because everyone else was. But then my curiosity got the best of me when I heard it may be turned into a movie.

This series is not well written. Aside from the bad grammar, the characters aren’t very realistic. I don’t mean that Cristian Grey is a multi-billionaire. There are people out there with that kind of income. I don’t mean that he’s be a traumatized young man who sought solace in BDSM. Sure, that can happen to. What was the most unrealistic was the series’ heroine, Anastasia Steele.

I can get behind a college student that somehow managed to hang on to her virginity. It’s rare, but could happen. What I can’t get behind is how naive she is. In this day and age with technology spewing out information at the touch of a fingertip, when songs a riddled with innuendo, and elementary school children are allowed to watch True Blood I find it strange that a 21-year-old woman would have no knowledge about anything about sex. Didn’t she have sex ed in school?

This made it hard for me to suspend belief and get into the book, but not very. The novels are actually kind of interesting. It’s like watching a train wreck. You don’t want to, but have trouble turning away. One thing I will say is that the writing improves with each book. While reading them you can see how James originally wrote them as fan fiction, but yet I can understand how they would have become popular. Sex, love, intrigue, and bondage. Where can that go wrong?

  1. I was curious about this series. I felt the same way about not reading it. I did read the reviews and you seem to be spot on about the quality of writing. I just don’t get why it is such a huge draw. This genre is flooded with options, so why is this so popular. Anyways, great post and thanks for taking one for the team and reading them. LOL!

    • Bahaha….you’re welcome. I will admit that I did get addicted to them. The story is kind of interesting. Luckily, I can overlook bad writing if it’s consistent. Wait…maybe that’s not a lucky thing. LMAO!
